Kaynemaile

Products
Kaynemaile is a New Zealand design and manufacturing company that produces a unique seamless mesh.
Kaynemaile mesh (KML22) is a unique polycarbonate mesh that offers innovative aesthetic and functional solutions for the design and architectural sectors, and has tremendous potential for a range of commercial and industrial applications.

Kaynemaile has a free form character that engages the senses (sight, sound and touch), and is lightweight, weighing only a fraction of comparable metal products. It is also extremely strong. Kaynemaile’s fully automated production process means that the mesh has no individual joins, while the interlocking format of Kaynemaile’s rings mean that load and any impact is evenly distributed, with each individual link reinforced by those surrounding it.

Kaynemaile mesh was recognised as a groundbreaking material at the international Hannover Fair in April 2007, where it won a prestigious iF Material Award. Past award winners at the Hannover Fair include products and companies such as iPod, BMW and Samsung.

An inventive approach
The revolutionary nature of Kaynemaile is reflected in the company’s patents, which are for inventions, rather than simply for its products. Kaynemaile’s entirely new approach to injection moulding, the machinery used in the manufacturing process, and the mesh produced are all unique inventions. In all, some 50 claims to inventiveness are protected by Kaynemaile’s international patents.

How is Kaynemaile manufactured?
Kaynemaile’s manufacturing process is the secret to its success. Kaynemaile is manufactured through a fully-automated process that utilises a patented modified injection-moulding machine that allows single polycarbonate rings to be moulded within multiple other rings. This means that Kaynemaile sheets can be produced seamlessly to unlimited dimensions.

Kaynemaile can be manufactured in a variety of colours, diameters and sizes making it suitable for numerous design requirements. It is fully recyclable and unlike metal production processes, creates no by-products. Kaynemaile is currently working towards becoming carbon-neutral.

What is Kaynemaile made out of?
The initial Kaynemaile Water & Ice range is made from Bayer MaterialScience AG’s Makrolon® polycarbonate. Bayer is one of the world’s largest polymer companies and the properties of Makrolon® mean that Kaynemaile mesh is fire-resistant (self-extinguishing), UV stable, chemical and impact resistant, and unlike traditional metal products, is not susceptible to rust when exposed to the elements.

Applications
The initial application for Kaynemaile mesh is in the design and architectural sectors, where its functionality, striking effects and environmental attributes open up a range of possibilities.
However, Kaynemaile’s manufacturing process means that there are a range of industrial applications that depend on strength and durability, for which the mesh offers future potential applications. Products as diverse as conveyer belts, filter-mesh, aquaculture screens and cargo-netting are all being investigated.
